I saw a tee shirt today that literally(figuratively, but who says "figuratively"?) blew...my...mind. The shirt had a big CSI and a thumb print on the front. Underneath the print it read “Christ’s Spirit Inside”. I had a rush of emotions, firstly; I was embarrassed. Following closely after that came a wave of frustration that the best Christians can do to hype their savior is rip off tv shows and media. My contention is that this tee shirt is objective evidence of a thought among Christians.
We think Jesus is boring.
We think that Jesus is boring and in order for anyone to become a Christian we need to wear sweet Jesus tee shirts like these:
The truth is that Jesus is anything but boring. We need to realize who Jesus is…he has changed the course of history. He sent 11 men into the world to tell of a God who redeems and rescues. This message flooded the Roman Empire, Africa and Asia within 200 years. Jesus IS the most revolutionary person in the history of our world. Jesus is NOT boring.
Jesus needs new PR. His hype crew is what’s lame...and we're a part of it.
Simple lesson to be learned…We have to stop trying to make Jesus cool. He is the definition of cool. Check out http://stuffchristianslike.net/ to read about funny and silly things that Christians do. The issue isn’t just in the church either. For those of us who are serving Christ in ministries not inherently affiliated with the Church, we too are afraid that Jesus could be boring. Jim Rayburn, the founder of Young Life was quoted saying, “It is a SIN to bore kids with the Gospel.” Even knowing that we in Young Life are still afraid that Jesus wont be attractive to our high school friends if we don’t have funny run ons or hilarious skits and mixers at club? Rob Bell in Velvet Elvis says, “The phrase Christian is a great verb but a terrible adjective.”
Jesus is revolutionary…we need to learn to get out of the way.
